This Week's Cover Work

Hi Guys

As you know, I am not in school this year as I am on Paternity Leave and am looking after my new son.

This week's cover work is on the front page of Fronter. It's the evaluation of your coursework process and is worth 10% of your final grade. Read it very carefully. It must be complete by next Tuesday 13th. You must still turn up to lessons if you wish to be registered as present. If you do not, you will be marked as absent whether you are in school or not.

Please make sure that this work is done properly, it's worth marks and is worth your attention.

Thanks

Work during lesson time this week

Hi Guys

Here's the work for this week's lessons:

Tuesday 23rd, M3 - http://http://fronter.com/barnet/links/files.phtml/1214858880$511059283$/Resources/G321+Foundation+Portfolio/Print+Production+DESIGN+HELP

Click on this and read the entire document. It is VERY helpful, no matter how many pages you have produced so far. If you are yet to finalise any of your pages, start with the tips on Front Cover and Contents Page. If you've already done them, have a look at the design tips anyway to see if you've missed anything. Everyone needs to read the Double Page Spread pages, it'll help you get marks.

If you don't read any of the above pages, you're throwing away marks. So read them all.

Wednesday 24th, M1 - We are in A3.1 AKA the room with the slowest computers in the world. So we'll be looking at two examples of magazine pages and analysing:

Framing and Composition
Layout and Design
Use of Fonts
Use of Colour

Then you'll be applying your findings to your own construction work.

Wednesday 24th, M5 - we are in AKY's room and it's Construction Work only

PLEASE NOTE - we are missing two lessons on Thursday due to PSHE Day and the next time we meet is 30th November. At that point you will only have 6 days until your deadline. It is therefore IMPERATIVE that you work in your own time in order to meet your deadline. As long as you organise your time and set you own deadlines, you'll be okay. If you think you'll be okay and leave everything until the last minute, YOU WON'T BE, especially if you already behind.

THE DEADLINE IS 6TH DECEMBER AND WILL NOT BE EXTENDED

Thanks

HOMEWORK FOR THE WEEKEND

Guys, you have two tasks to do before our next lesson on Tuesday. Make sure that it is all blogged and up to date by then:

1. Apply use and gratification theory to your main task so far.

Use and gratification theory of the audience explains the use of media in terms of the gratification of social or psychological needs of the individual.Using this definition of use and gratification, how do the following apply to the typical reader youhave profiled for your music magazine?
• What information is provided about the music artist/band itself?
• What sense of personal identity has the reader with the magazine and music forms that it promotes?
• How does the music magazine promote a sense of belonging as a part of a community of readers?
• What form of entertainment does the magazine provide for the reader?
• What form does this entertainment take and how does this create forms of escapism for thereader?

You have done this for your preliminary task. Apply the same process to your main task. Easy and it's worth marks.

2. Read a pop magazine interview of your choice and attempt to break down the article into sections. Comment on the use of language in the article, highlighting significant examples. Next, attempt to consider how this might appeal to the magazine’s intended audience. Finally, how does the article promote or market the image of the band? What does the article discuss? Does the article promote a new album or single release?

Use a magazine of your choice or use the exemplar on Fronter. Again, do this, I can give you marks for it.

Also, continue with your coursework construction

HOMEWORK FOR THE WEEKEND

Hi Guys,

Here is your homework for the next lesson, Tuesday 12th October:

  • Conduct a questionnaire with your peers to decide what items (content) you will put on your front cover. For a good example, go to www.lisaasmedia.wordpress.com and look at the entry for October 5th 2009. This will give a good idea of what to look for. You can of course come up with your own questions.

  • Complete the final draft of your front cover as best you can. Take into consideration the results of your questionnaire and what people would like to see in the magazine.

  • Create a rough draft of your contents page. It doesn't have to be finished. Remember the good example on Fronter.

You can of course do more work than this but this must be the minimum. if you decide to keep going remember that your planning and research is just as important as your construction. Evidence everything as you go.

Thanks

UPDATE

Hi Guys

Well, we are nearly one month into the course and you are already well into your coursework. Some of you are making very good progress and conducting some very thorough research. Some of you need to catch up - Dyana, Philip, Jack and Juan - all of your blogs are incomplete. Get them up to date and quickly.

I have checked all of the blogs and left comments. Read them please.

You must have an element of audience research whenever you can. Be sure to also specify the audience that you targeted by age/sex/profession etc. It will better inform your final artefacts.

Look at www.getaheadocrmedia.blogspot.com for some good examples of AS blogs from last year. It is well worth your while and serves as part of your research.

Any problems message me

PRELIMINARY TASK EVALUATION FOOTAGE!

Hi guys

You remember when we filmed you evaluating your preliminary tasks in front of the group in order to make improvements to the work? Well, there was a purpose to this - to edit the part that you did and post it on your blog!

You can find the footage in the resources folder in our room Fronter as a WMV file. Simply edit down the part with you in using Moviemaker and post it on to your blog. If you are clever you will record a voiceover explaining to the examiner what you're doing at any specific point. It doesn't have to be long - a minute or two will do, longer is still OK - but by doing this you will gain extra marks by displaying excellent use of ICT skills.

If you wish to record a voiceover your PC should have a basic recording programme - if not, download 'Audacity' a simple freeware product which is very easy to use. If you cannot record a voiceover, be sure to add a note on the blog explaining what is happening.

Luis has already done this and it's on his blog. Go and check it out - http://www.luismediablog.blogspot.com/.

Do this - it's easy marks to gain and we have the resources to do it.

PEACE!

AS MEDIA STUDIES DICTIONARY

Hi all

Happy New Year to you, I hope you had a relaxing break.

On Fronter I have posted the AS Media Studies Word Dictionary. It is essential for the second half of the course. I will make sure that everyone has a hard copy but please also look and refer to this document, it is VERY IMPORTANT!

Thanks
