NEW STUFF ON FRONTER

Hello

There are some new Print Exemplars on Fronter, you can find them in the resources file, then go to G321 Foundation Portfolio and the new file is in there. They have been sent to me by the exam board today but we can still use them to our advantage:

One is Low Level Three (36/60 - D)

One is Level Three (42/60 - B/C)

One is Level Four (55/60 - A/A*)

There is also a breakdown of how the examiner has awarded these marks.

HAVE A GOOD LOOK AT THESE EXAMPLES AND COMPARE THEM TO YOUR OWN. THEN LOOK AT ANY FINAL AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT ! DO THIS NOW!!!!!

COURSEWORK UPDATE

Hi All

By now I should have your coursework. All of it. Printed off in colour and handed in on Fronter.

Some of you have done this - WELL DONE

You should now be working on your Evaluative questions that we discussed in class. These should be in your blogs by the end of the week

IMPORTANT - IF YOU WERE NOT IN THE LESSON ON MONDAY YOU MUST SEE ME ASAP, IT'S IMPORTANT!

Remember - some of the evaluative areas you will have already completed in your blogs although it may be a matter of expanding existing areas in order to fully answer that particular area.

EVERYTHING DONE BY FRIDAY PLEASE SO I CAN MARK IT AND DO PREDICTIONS FOR THE BEGINNING OF NEXT TERM

Thanks

STUFF TO MAKE SURE IS IN YOUR BLOG

Hi All

Nice to see so much good work in class today, keep it up people.

Here's what needs to go into your blog as evidence over the next coming week.

-Include photos of all your models. Say who they are and what they are wearing/how they are dressed

-Include any test samples for your front cover and contents page

-Include your final photo choices BEFORE and AFTER any Photoshopping

-Include your Front Page and Contents Page AS THEY ARE RIGHT NOW. Detail 1. what is complete and 2. what needs changing and why.

-Include any feedback that I offered today during classtime

This MUST be done by next week. It seems like alot but you've already done the work - you just need to evidence it accordingly if you haven't already done so.

How to easily evidence your 'ideal reader'

I found this blog from a Media student at another college. She found a really clever way of identifying her 'ideal reader' for the film she was making. Click on it and follow her method - you'd be mad not to, it's easy marks.

Hi All

Hi Guys

Unfortunately, due to exceptional family circumstances, I will not be in school at all this week. I am currently in Germany and have very limited computer access to plase do not reply to this message.

I would like you all to crack on with planning your main tasks for coursework. Take on board the notes from Thursday's lesson to plan your research if you have not already done so (Tanique - ask to copy someone's notes). Research existing magazine covers online. Use the exemplar material on Fronter. Start to plan your photoshoot. That should keep you busy enough.

By next week I will expect you to have come up with a title, identified your ideal reader, come up with layouts for ALL FOUR PAGES and blogged all your findings accordingly. If anyone still owes me Preliminary material I need that too.

Also, the footage of the preliminary evaluations is also on Fronter in the Resources areas. If you are still stuck for something to do, select the part you are in using Moviemaker and embed the material into your blog. If you are really clever, you can record a voiceover to go 'over the top' to explain more clearly what you did, the feedback you received and how you responded accordingly. Use Audacity freeware to help with this (Google it if you don't know what I'm talking about) You may have to do this at home using a headset. If you can't, don't worry, but edit your part down accordingly and embed it.

Thanks and sorry for not being in school

Footage

Wha Gwarn?

Hope you had a nice half term. Just to let you know that all the footage for the Preliminary Evaluation has been uploaded onto Fronter for your editing purposes. Go to our room, then go to Resources and then the named file. It's all in there.

I have also changed the front page. Have a look around, especially at the youtube examples when you get home. It will give an idea of the sort of thing we will be doing after Christmas.

Remember - all coursework in by tomorrow please (Thursday)

oh yeah, i forgot...

By the way...

I spoke to Madame Singh the other day and she is taking her GCSE film lot to see a film next Monday at the Phoenix. It would be supercool if you could all go.

AND BEFORE ANYONE MOANS!!!

  1. Free Film
  2. Morning off school
  3. There is no 3. That SHOULD be enough. Jeez...

I think the film is 'Looking for Eric', should be good. I can't go, but YOU are!!!

Nice

LFE :)

so far so good...

What is up Media peeps?

I hope that you're all well. Just wanted to take this opportunity to say well done and pat you all on the back. You are keeping up with your blogs (most of you) and starting to make good progress with your preliminary tasks.

By Friday of this week you need to have done the following:

  • Decided on a TITLE and a TAGLINE
  • Taken loads of photographs to use - don't forget to Photoshop
  • Sorted out your layout
  • Made a few examples for audience survey purposes
  • Conducted a survey of some sort - whether within class time or in the common room - and RECORDED your findings in order to influence final design choices
  • Finalised FONT choice - type, size and colour (and said why, of course)

Ideally your front page should be pretty much done by Monday 19th - this may mean some effort made at home over the weekend.

Remember - if you get stuck or think that you've finished, do two things:

1. Always ask yourself "Have I justified my choice?" If the answer is no, then make sure you do and record it on your blog.

2. Look at the Exemplar material on Fronter. It will always give you ideas!

Next week will be dedicated to your CONTENTS page so it would be to your advantage to get the Front Page out of the way asap.

Well hello there lovely Media crew,

This is primarily for the benefit of Messrs Fee and Valtierra but anyone else can read it, obviously, as it's a blog

While the rest of us are at the jolly old theatre you two will be doing the following:

In preparation for your Preliminary Task (school/college magazine) you must come up with the following by the next lesson

  • If you haven't done so already, finalise your own plan of what you will have achieved by what date. It's a useful exercise to undergo. Put this on your blog.
  • Come up with at least TWO basic layouts of the front page - a basic sketch will do
  • Potential TITLES for your product
  • Potential CONTENTS for the front page - by this I mean what sort of font size/type will you use and why, what colours do you have in mind and so on
  • Decide on any STYLE you have in mind. There is a big difference between 6th Form at a school and one at a college. Note those differences and allow them to inform your research. Also, will it focus on any one department, like the exemplar material on Fronter, or will it be a little more generic
  • If you can, start to take some PHOTOS around the school. You may use your own camera or there is one in reception. Tell them it's for AS Media and it should be okay.
  • If you have time, conduct a survey of your peers. You may wish to compile a questionnaire for your own convenience and record your findings in a graph or pie chart or something like that
  • And, of course, don't forget to blog all your findings. This is important now as it's worth marks. Big. Fat. Marks.

Be prepared to stand up and present your findings to the class on Thursday. I know it seems like I'm asking you to do extra work but we will serve as a focus group for you. Focus Group = lovely research material = big fat marks. And everyone else will have to do it eventually...

If you manage to finish all of that in the space of one hour, you have my express permission to relax. Put your feet up. Jam.

Thanks ever so much

LFE :)

I want to clear a few things up...

Hi Everyone

It has come to my attention that there has been some confusion in the content of the Media Studies course and the Film Studies course run by Madame Prina and Madame Singh. Hopefully we will have gone through the basics last week in terms of coursework, exam requirements and so on but in case anyone is still a bit flummoxed, here's some answers to some questions

  • The coursework that you will produce for me this term will be based upon Magazine Production. It's worth 50% of your final grade (which is quite a big chunk) I will guide you through the process and it will all be done by the time you go off for Christmas holidays (Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells etc)
  • After Christmas we will embark on the second half of the course which is called 'Key Media Concepts: TV Drama' in which we will be studying a range of TV and Film extracts in preparation for the written exam next June.
  • In the exam you will see an unseen extract of a British TV Drama and NOT a film extract. The reason we use film in lessons is because they are full of great examples of camera shot, editing, composition etc that we can analyse and work out how the Media TEXT (i.e. the TV/Film extract) can represent certain areas of society. We are NOT studying how to make films, we are studying the MEDIA and how different areas of the Media are constructed.
  • At present we are messing about and having fun with scripts/video cameras. This is so that you can get a basic understanding early on in the course of different areas of the media that will be expanded upon as the course progresses, like target audiences, archetypal characters in soap operas and camera shots and editing when you come to edit it yourselves using Moviemaker. I thought it would be fun early on to take part in practical exercises before the coursework/theory work kicks in for real in about three weeks time. Otherwise you might find the course dull just reading/taking notes/looking at Powerpoints/listening to me waffle on (which isn't dull, I know, but just to emphasise the point)

Capiche? Lovely. If anyone is still confused talk to me or Madame Prina, we will clear it up for you and make you feel all clever...

Remember - by Thursday you will have completed your Storyboard in preparation for your camera shoot. I will be marking it so make it as good as you can.

BUT we don't have a double lesson, only a single, as it's early closing for the Open Evening. However, you SHOULD be able to do this in an hour if you're all focused on the task ahead. If you need to stay for an extra twenty minutes to get the job completed, I'm sure that will be fine.

One more thing, if anyone wants to borrow a text book for the year write me a cheque as a deposit made payable to 'Bishop Douglass RC School' Or if you're feeling flush you can go here

http://www.hoddereducation.co.uk/Title/9780340958988/OCR_Media_Studies_for_AS_Third_Edition.htm

and buy your own.

Cheerio me lovelies

Today's Work 13th September 2009

Hi Guys

Well, by now you have probably made up your mind on whether or not to take this course. Hopefully you'll stick with it. It's fun, trust me!

Today is Monday so that means that you have to complete your Soap Opera scripts. Remember:

  • Two minutes long but can consist of several scenes
  • Archetypal characters - slapper, geezer, battleaxe, idiot etc
  • Try and introduce some conflict.

These scenes must be completed by the end of today. Aim for four or five sides of A4. Once this is done we can start production on our storyboards in preparation for filming.

By the way, for more cool storyboard templates and advice, visit

http://karenjlloyd.com/blog/free-storyboard-template-downloads/

Karen is a top class animator and her blog will give you loads of ideas for your own process. I recommend, people!

Cheers
